Sleep Paralysis sucks...
it happened to me just yesterday on my new sofabed, in the designated study room (aka The Yellow Room). The first time was a few years back (think it was about 8 years?)
it was a terrifyign experience then. And it is still a terrifying experience now.it feels that you are in a semi-conscious state but you are unable to move nor speak, no matter how hard u tried. You thought you had moved, you will realise later that it was juz a figment of your imagination. You tried to scream or shout or call out to somebody, anybody, but i think nothing came out? or perhaps only whimpers that can only be heard within the same room?
it was a constant struggle to make the slightest movement. All I could think of was "when will i really wake up?. When I finally was able to really move and get myself upright, I was wondering "am I still imagining things?... Even after i left the room to the living hall.. it was REALLY freaking me out! I realised i was napping for 1.5hrs when i checked out the clock, juz how long was i in that state? I always had a big problem sleeping in strange environment, strange bed.. but i never thought it will be tat bad :(
I think it was a combination of myriad (always wanted to use this word!) of things. Work stress, wedding prep stress, dealing w arguments stress, managing parents expectation stress and dozens of personal anxiety.... combined with a strange room, glowing w yellow light.. i guess, it can't be helped. The stress has to come in some manner and it juz happened that it was there on that day. TO make things a bit worse, after that, i was still feeling really creeped out and then had a nagging headache for the rest of the evening. We decided to catch the movie Stardust.. a nice fantasy movie that kind of made me forget the horrible feeling that was nagging me since i woke.
Even now, when i think back, it still feels wierd. But, i chose to believe the scientific explanation of Sleep Paralysis, cos I wont accept the explanation that i had been sat on by a demon (Traditional Chinese explanation).
