The obsession that was Hyperion and now the Fall of Hyperion.
I had refused to read Hyperion for close to 10 years... Yes, I had it for that long... The reason why? I had forgotten. I found it a few months back behind all my other books in the book shelf... I noticed it as the book I refused to read...I guess when I was younger, I am not interested in sci-fi stuff..and I vaguely remembered it was bought not by my choice.. hmm.. was it even my book to begin it? Anyhow... I decided to give it a try.. It was strongly recommended many years back.. I read the summary at the back of the paperback and guessed that it sounded interesting enough to render it a try.
The first few pages was hard.. I had to switch my mindset from the usual fantasy stuff to sci-fi stuff.Beyond the initial chapters, I had to re-read some of the pages to get a better understanding.. when the first story of Father Dure unravelled in the book... I was hooked... The eagerness to read each of the pilgrim's story was intense. When the book ended with the pilgrims entering the Valley of the Time Tombs, I was left hanging dry...
Where was the goddamned ending?!!!!! I resigned myself to my fate.. of the constant wondering of the ends of the pilgrims will be...
Months later, i chanced upon The Fall of Hyperion.. I was browsing at Borders for more books by Dan Simmons..I saw it and I could not believe my eyes... There, on the cover, was the Shrike... and Sol offering the infantRachel to it.... I was delighted beyond words... I bought it and started reading...I am now halfway through the book. It was not an easy read.. It was intense... I have bookmarked certain pageswhere I felt the author has written especially well... particularly the part of Martin Silenus impaled on the Tree of Pain... I am progressing into Part Three of the book... And every cell in my body want to go home to read it... What happens when the Time Tombs open? Will mankind perished? Will there be a hero? Who will get their one wish granted by the Shrike?
The mystery continues.....
